Chasing Dreams at Fred Wild Elementary: Building Resilience and Self-Worth with Motivational Youth Speaker Eddie Cortes
To captivate the young minds at Fred Wild Elementary, I kick-started the presentation by sharing my childhood dream – playing professional baseball for the New York Yankees. With the room buzzing, a professional broadcaster narrated the play-by-play of this dream. The students, caught up in the excitement, cheered me on. As the segment concluded with a home run, the room erupted in cheers and applause. This set the stage for the core message: chase your dreams even if they seem impossible, and never give up.
The Shocking Twist: When Dreams Meet Discouragement
However, I then revealed a surprising twist – I gave up on my dreams. Gasps filled the room, and a student exclaimed, “Eddie, you’re not supposed to give up on your dreams!” I agreed and proceeded to share the personal story behind my decision.
I confided that when I shared my dream with my cousin, instead of encouragement, I faced ridicule. He dismissed my dream, asserting I wasn’t good, strong, fast, or talented enough for baseball. Devastated, my confidence shattered, and I abandoned baseball entirely. I stopped believing in myself because I felt unworthy of my dreams.
Relating to Student Struggles: Overcoming Feelings of Inadequacy
Addressing the students directly, I acknowledged that many of them might feel similarly – not good enough, not smart enough, not pretty enough, or not talented enough. Yet, I stressed that they are enough, worthy of their dreams, and equipped with all they need to pursue them.
Their potential, I emphasized, surpasses anyone’s opinion. They are brimming with possibilities and deserving of their dreams. It was a powerful reminder that resonated with the students, prompting Principal Megan to share that the students couldn’t stop discussing their dreams throughout the day.
The Heartwarming Aftermath: Belief and Inspiration
In a touching moment, Jacob, a fourth-grade student, approached me after the presentation. “Eddie, I believe in you. I think you should chase your dream again and play for the New York Yankees.” Grateful for his belief, I thanked him, appreciating the profound impact of the message.
My time at Fred Wild Elementary was nothing short of amazing. The students’ enthusiasm, fun, and engagement throughout the presentation were truly inspiring. Principal Megan Moesching’s leadership is commendable, steering a team of dedicated educators who value each student and champion their potential and dreams. The seeds of resilience and self-worth were sown that day, encouraging these young minds to fearlessly pursue their dreams.
